Lewis Hayden is appointed a messenger for the Massachusetts Secretary of State.

The first African-American public official in Massachusetts, Hayden is appointed to the position after his clothing store at 121 Cambridge Street goes out of business. The post allows him to continue his work helping fugitive slaves.
